President's Letters

September 2015

We've had a nice, quiet August. Now we've become very eventful.

New Members Induction Dinner

This event chaired by Dame Sharon Franke, is guaranteed to be one of the high points of the year. We have a stellar group of new members joining us, and we'll be welcoming them into our organization in great style. Lafayette restaurant is elegant, with a delectably creative menu. Our dinner will be held in their vaulted private dining room. It's important that we are all there to welcome the impressive new members into our organization. This dinner will surely accomplish that brilliantly. There are still some spaces left. Please show your support of LDNY by sending your rsvp ASAP! Monday, September 28, 6:30 to 8:30 PM. We are counting on you!

The Next Big Bite

Plans are moving ahead for "The Next Big Bite", our not-to-bemissed October fundraiser scheduled for Monday, October 26th, beginning at 6:00 PM. An impressive panel of experts will predict the future of the food world in 2016 has been brought together: moderator Rozanne Gold and panelists Amanda Cohen, Amanda Hesser, Marion Nestle and Mimi Sheraton. We are in the process of finalizing the many details of the program. The location is the spectacular new Institute of Culinary Education space on Liberty St. www.ice.edu/aboutus/facilities-technologies.

It will be one of the great events of the fall. Prepare to be amazed. The program is sure to sell out early so sign up ASAP when your evite arrives.

Annual Meeting

Our official, important Annual Meeting is on Monday, November 9, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the International Culinary Center on Crosby St. We will meet the new Board members, review what we've accomplished so far this year and look forward to what we are planning for the coming year. It is important for every LDNY member to attend. There is no fee for this event. Refreshments will be served

Hail to Jacques

A celebration for the 80th birthday of the great Jacques Pepín will be held on Tuesday, November 17th. A cocktail reception at the test kitchens of Good Housekeeping magazine will honor this seminal figure of the food world. Be sure to save the date for this limited-space event

The Holiday Party

Dame Eleanor Sigona is working her magic to create a wonderful holiday event for us on Tuesday, December 1st, at Barbetta Restaurant. Details to follow.

Looking Back to July...

The Wonderful Scholarship Reception

Our Scholarship event on July 21st was excellent, as usual. Twenty-four students received funding in amounts ranging from $1000 to $5000.

Thanks go out to so many Dames...

  • Scholarship Co chairs, Karen Goodlad and May Matta-Aliah
  • The very hard working Scholarship Committee
  • All the scholarship donors, including the amazingly generous Aileen Robbins who donated $10,000
  • Our Honorary Chair, Harriette Cole, who presented the new Jonell Nash Memorial Scholarship to ICE student Renae Wilson in the amount of $4500
  • Mentoring Committee Co-Chairs Suzi O'Rourke and Alison Awerbuch
  • Kathleen Sanderson and Margaret Happel-Perry who organized the reception
  • Caroline Lee-Smile who took charge of the reception desk
  • Bethany Burke of Palm Bay Imports who donated the wines and Lori Tieszen who gave us Stoli Vodka

The event was held at ICC, which always does a superb for us.

This is surely one of our proudest accomplishments. Don't Forget to Vote!

Ballots for new members of the Board of Directors, Delegates to the 2016 LDEI conference and the 2016 Nominating Committee will be available to the membership from September 9th to September 30th. Please note that some members have found their ballot in spam, so have a look if you did not receive yours. And be sure vote.

Looking forward to a fascinating fall!

Best regards,

Linda Lawry
