Our organization thrives because Dames renew their membership every year. The time has come, so please renew at your earliest convenience. The form for recording your participation this past year is at the end of this letter. We ask that Dames be active members of our organization by attending programs, providing a donation to our scholarship fund, or serving our chapter in other ways and staying in touch and connected on the Websites for LDNY (new and greatly improved!) and LDEI.
Fill in the programs you have attended and your other involvements for the past year and send it in. The renewal fee can be paid through PayPal or by check. Secretary Joan Brower will be sending out another reminder so you can link to PayPal to use a credit card or send a check. This is important. Our chapter depends on it!
Let the membership committee know if you have someone who would be a good candidate to join LDNY. It is vital that we continue to bring active, successful women into our organization. They must have at least 10 years of experience in the food, beverage or hospitality professions- and most importantly - be willing and eager to be an active member of our organization. Attending programs and serving on committees are important commitments. Membership forms have been sent out. If you would like another set, let us know.
Dame Lidia Bastianich gave 45 Dames a most wonderful lunch at Felidia restaurant on April 27th. There were four courses of her delicious food and wines from her winery in Italy. She was there to tell us about her style of cooking and share her personal history. She was born in an Italian town that is now part of Croatia. The family moved to Trieste, Italy, and then eventually to the United States. During all that time, she was learning about food and went on to become a successful restaurateur, retailer, cookbook author, renowned television star and a Dame! We also had the opportunity to buy her latest cookbook, Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine, Everything You Need to Know to Be a Great Italian Cook, autographed by Lidia. We are most grateful for her generosity in hosting this outstanding program.
On Wednesday, May 18th we are being invited to Dame Elizabeth Karmel’s rooftop to enjoy the perfect combination of hickory-smoked whole hog BBQ with Kentucky bourbon. An expert on the subject of bourbon, Philip Pepperdine, will be there to provide insight into the differences between American whiskeys and ryes. Register before May 1st to get the early reservation fee. The invitation follows at the end of this letter.
The New York Summer Fancy Food Show will bring Dames from around the country to New York. We will again welcome them to a cozy reception at the headquarters of the Stoli Vodka Group, thanks to Dame Lori Tieszen. It will be on Monday, June 27th.
Dame Ursula Massoud and her family own one of the best wineries on the North Fork of Long Island. On Sunday, September 11th we will visit to have a tour, learn about their winemaking, taste their great wines and enjoy lunch.
There will be a visit to Sur la Table with former NY Dame Doris Greenspan to discuss cookies in all their glory, on Thursday, November 3rd.
Dames Jan Hazard and Michele Scicolone are the co-chairs of our 2016 Scholarship Reception on July 20th. They are working to find wonderful gifts for our raffle, the income from which will go directly to our scholarship fund. Please let them know if you can offer something wonderful to be raffled off at the reception. Scholarship is one of our most important endeavors and raising money for it is a vital part of our work. Be in touch with Jan at email@example.com and Michele at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dame Carol Brock will receive an honorary doctorate from SUNY Cobleskill at a ceremony on Saturday, May 14th, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Dames are welcome to attend. Cobleskill is about 3 hours north of NYC. Please be in touch with James Feldman, the Cobleskill Director of Communications at email@example.com for specifics on the event and directions. As a small acknowledgement of this accomplishment, our chapter sent Carol a gift of flowers.
We have so many great things to look forward to. Hope to see you soon!
